Most people know that high sugar consumption can lead to cavities. But did you know that other things besides sugar can cause cavities? Cavities are caused by bacteria. When these bacteria come into contact with sugar or carbohydrates they produce acid which destroys tooth enamel. The food and snacks you choose affect your risk of tooth decay.

Did you know?
  • Sitting down and eating a chocolate bar is healthier for your teeth than snacking on crackers throughout the day? Every time you put something in your mouth you are subjecting your teeth to an acid attack. If you are going to snack, it is best to limit the amount of snacks throughout the day.
  • Plaque loves sugar, carbohydrates, and sticky foods. When choosing snacks, keep in mind that some snacks are better for your teeth than others.
  • Even diluted juice is unhealthy for your teeth. If you do give your child juice, offer it during mealtimes. Between meals only water should be offered.

Good snack choices:
  • Cheese
  • Nuts
  • Fresh fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Yogurt

Poor snack choices:
  • Dried fruit
  • Gummy fruit snacks
  • Sticky candy
  • Suckers
  • Sodas and sports drinks
